This page summarises how the Book Africa Travel marketplace described itself in 2020. It is an archive-based profile and not a statement from a current business.

What the project did

The idea was to let visitors experience Africa in the way residents do, while supporting the people who offer the experience. It relied on a network of local travel experts and guides who would welcome guests to their home country, city or community. Guides were listed across a wide range of countries, from Ghana and Nigeria in the west to Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia in the east, and South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia in the south. Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia represented the north, with island nations such as Seychelles and Cape Verde also named.

The pitch emphasised that Africa has deep culture, history and food, and that local experts are the best people to show them.

Stated mission

To connect travellers with the best destinations and experiences in Africa, while helping local people earn a sustainable income.

Four values it listed

  • Integrity. Being honest and fair with customers and with tour providers.
  • Simplicity. Making it easy to pick an experience, with the local provider handling the rest.
  • Passion. Guides were described as eager to share beautiful places with visitors.
  • Respect. Putting the customer first and listening to what they want from a trip.

How to use this information

If you are comparing travel companies, values like these are a useful checklist. Ask how a company chooses and pays guides, what happens when a tour is cancelled, and how it handles complaints. You can look at example itineraries on the home page or read the frequently asked questions.
