Book Africa Travel was the name of an online marketplace that described its mission as helping visitors see Africa through the eyes of local guides. This site is an informational resource built around the same theme: how travellers can approach the continent through locally run tours, and what to prepare before going. It does not sell tours or take bookings.
Local guides know the neighbourhoods, markets, trails and stories that rarely make the brochures. Spending with small operators also keeps more money in the communities visitors pass through. The archived marketplace listed experts in countries such as Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Rwanda, Senegal, Kenya, Morocco, Ethiopia, Mauritius, Seychelles, Egypt, Botswana, Tunisia, Cape Verde and Tanzania.
The old site used a short planner built on four questions, which are still a good way to start:
Read the travel visa overview and the notes on travel insurance before committing. Common questions are collected in the FAQ, the story behind the project is on the about page, and a few destination articles appear on the blog.
