In spring 2020, tour marketplaces including Book Africa Travel paused promotion and asked visitors to stay at home. This page records that message for historical interest. It is not current health or travel advice.

The message

The archived note urged people to protect themselves during the pandemic, promised that the tours would still be waiting once conditions improved, and encouraged readers to check on family and friends. It repeated guidance from the World Health Organization:

  • wash your hands often,
  • cough or sneeze into your elbow,
  • avoid touching your face,
  • keep more than three feet (about one metre) from others,
  • stay home if you feel unwell.

Readers were pointed to the WHO and the US Centers for Disease Control for updates, and to state and city rules.

Tracking restrictions

The site collected entry restrictions for African countries and said it would update them as news arrived. In general, restrictions of that period included border closures, quarantine, testing requirements and flight suspensions, and they changed often.

Tours that were highlighted

The page displayed a selection of trips for when travel resumed, among them a Morocco itinerary, a historic route in northern Ethiopia, a cooking experience in Kampala, a tour of Rwanda, the Garden Route, the Cape Coast day, Zanzibar fishing and a Kenya safari.

Lessons for later trips

Check official sources before departure, keep flexible bookings, and consider insurance that explains what it does and does not cover. See the insurance overview and the virtual experience page for ways to explore from home.
